How to Monitor Your Child's Internet Usage
Kids are getting their first internet access to web at younger ages than ever before. Children that are able to use the internet will be better prepared for high school, college and the job market. As web become increasingly common among children, a number of problems have cropped up.
Anyone can pretend to be anybody on the web and kids are in great danger especially if they send out personal information and pictures of themselves. It is our responsibility to know what our kids are doing. Parents need to remind them of the potential risks of their actions on the Internet. It is important to explain it without scaring them.
So, what can parents that they have not already done? Here are some tips in monitoring child's internet usage:
Ask your children where they use the internet: library, school, a friend's house, etc. Who are your children's friends? Communicate with their parents.? Ask them if they monitor their child's internet usage. If not, ask your child not to use the internet at that child's home.
Explain the rules. No matter how you choose to monitor your child's Internet use, it is important to let them know that you will be a part of the computer time. Explain that you are doing it for their own safety.
Discuss what kind of things are not OK on the web. Tell your kids what types of websites are acceptable and what are not. Explain what images they should not be sending or viewing. When discussing the web, ask your children to inform you about people saying sexual things, asking for asking for their contact information or to meet them.
Use software with parental controls features that
can be set to only allow usage at certain times or to certain websites.
Put your child on a schedule and make sure they follow it. The best
choice for the parental control is a HSLAB Access Control Products Family software.
Join your child while on the web to play games and see what other things he or she likes. Try to place your home computer in an open space area. You should always be able to see what your children are doing on the web.
Monitor bookmarks and history records. This will provide an information on the kinds of sites your children are visiting.? Recent software innovations have made it possible for parents to install site blockers into their browsers. If you are concerned about sites your child visits, don't judge him or her; you can always block those sites, if necessary.
The best thing any parent can do to protect their child is to be honest and open. If you let your child know about the abuses of the internet and that they are able to speak to you without being judged, they will come to you when these things happen or if they have questions or concerns.
